    Hi Bill 👋 The soundtrack is very, ummm... creative 😁My first club level lap dash ever was at Catalina in 1994 (30 yrs 🙄) I had a Datto 1600 with a best of 81.58. It was a very scary track with virtually no run off areas. Especially for a NOOB.

    Hello bill, what density mat are you using and how many layers? I counted 3 layers, how thick would that make the cured plug? Great tutorials by the way, about to start a plug of a custom rear bar for my drift car and the 3 part series you have on this bumper has taught me alot

    Why not use the original frame? You could shorten it and fret out the excess bits.

    • @BillsBuildandRace
      @BillsBuildandRace 15 днів тому

      There is no frame in the donor Corolla - it is uni-body construction. Cutting that to fit my needs would take more time than building a space frame chassis. It would be incredibly ugly, have sharp edges all over the place, and be way heavier than my tube frame. It's floor would have an unwanted tunnel going right down the middle of it where the driver now needs to sit.

    Great video, it seems SO Easy for you to design and create something out of nothing, per say. You sure make it look easy. I have a Corvette body that I have cut in half, I need to add 4" to the width, do you have a video showing anything like this? Just wanted to check with a pro first. Thanks, GREAT WORK and thanks for sharing!!!!

    • @BillsBuildandRace
      @BillsBuildandRace 16 днів тому

      G'day Randy. No - I don't have a video showing widening a fiberglass body - probably because you can't properly just cut & re-join fiberglass, as it doesn't stick well to itself. It relies on the overlap of the fibers for its strength, and you don't get that intertwining with cut & join. It will hold initially - but soon crack & separate. Epoxy resin instead of the usual polyester resin will give a slightly strong bond, along with holes drilled between the two parts to allow the resin to lock in. But you end up with a heavy job, and it will still crack anyway. The only way to do this is to cut & widen your body & use it as a plug/die on which to make a multi-piece flanged mold of the whole car. Big job - but the copy out of those molds will be strong, and uniformly thick. I know you didn't want to hear that... but you don't want to put the time and money into cut & join, and then having it all fail.

      @@BillsBuildandRace thank you SO MUCH!!! This is why I ask a professional, and I greatly appreciate your wisdom and reply. I was just hoping to fill in the thickness of the void, then overlap the "top and bottom" some 10 inches both sides for the strength and bond-per say.... but, if that will fail, it is not something I want to do. Thanks!!!

    • @BillsBuildandRace
      @BillsBuildandRace 17 днів тому

      Bunnings don't sell Wattle products, but Mitre Ten do. However the best place to get fresh stock of 7008 is at Wattle stores, or if you can't find one near you look for a paint shop.

    Just finished watching your 6 part video series showing how to sculpt custom car bodywork. I was just curious if aluminum honeycomb panels could be used to achieve the same affect? I do realize with multiple compound curves, that it might not be even feasible. Especially since aluminum panels are rigidly flat, one of the more desirable aspects of them. However, they would be significantly stronger without adding an abundance of weight. They would weigh more than basically anything in fiberglass but still less than anything in steel or even tin. Thanks for any advice, or opinions.

    • @BillsBuildandRace
      @BillsBuildandRace 24 дні тому

      TRying to make a compound curved shape out of rigid paneling would be impossible. With alumininium honeycomb panels there is the additional problem that the nylon inner core is highly flammable... think of those terrible hi-rise building fires where the cladding caught fire! For that reason they are not even suitable in race cars for flat panels like floors - but of course I've seen a number of race car builders using them because they are unaware of how dangerous they are. Once they catch fire you cannot put them out.

      @@BillsBuildandRace Thanks for the reply. I have quite a bit of knowledge about the event I mentioned. At the time I was the president of a Cams affiliated club and was the guy who was instrumental in the organisation of the event, from it's very beginning to the end. Being that is has been 40+ years ago, I have a recollection of being told it was the first night event held, the more I think about it, I am swaying towards it being in 1982.. The criteria Cams required to approve the event was high, but were able to meet all the requirements and was given the go ahead. I clearly remember that the entries were filled within a week to 10 days of invites being posted to other clubs and may have had a limit of 80 entries. The event began around mid-afternoon for practice runs with the main event starting shortly after sunset when the lighting towers were switched on. There was 3 or 4 towers located on the Hill & 2 near the start & pit paddock. It was a huge turn out with a lot of spectators and the event ran smoothly, with no incidents at all. The Cams GM (at the time) also made a unexpected appearance on the night. Unfortunately, I was the only qualified Steward in the club and could not drive that night. If you are interested, I am available to speak with you about the event if there is a way to contact you. (I have a photo from that night of car on the track. (I kept the photo because I had built the engine for it) Thanks again !! 👍
